.. and other cheap DIY paper-craft project ideas for your wedding.

Do-it-yourself (DIY) weddings are all the rage these days. And why not?

  • Doing-it-yourself means that you can get something exactly right. No compromises.
  • It also means that you are putting a little bit more of yourself in your wedding; personalisation, family history, a personal touch.
  • They are easier on your wedding budget! A lot of brides will probably need our own "bailout" this year :-) Eveything else being equal, a cheap wedding is better, no?
  • The digital age: increasingly, you can use your computer or some other gadget (digital cameras, iPhones..) to produce something as professionally finished as what was only possible by some expensive specialised service a few years ago
  • Availability: more and more wedding vendors, online and offline, are jumping on the DIY bandwagon, providing bulk materials, from card stock, to favour components, blank digita scrapbooks etc etc.

More than just about every other aspect of your wedding, invitations & stationary and other paper-related projects fit the DIY bill perfectly. Every one of the five points above applies fully: you can easily and cheaply produce your own, personalised invitations, on your home computer, buying the "raw materials" online. There are also two additional benefits:

  1. Why stop at invitations? There are a great many other ways you can use quality paper products to enhance your wedding decor, favours etc.
  2. Get your groom involved in the project? As a rule, the guys will not really care about flower arrangements, but ask them to play with their computer and they will probably be game..
So the possibilities are endless.. but talk is cheap and what you need is some concrete practical ideas, so we turned to the pros among our wedding invitation suppliers members and asked them for their help, suggestions and examples. The good folks at Paper Garden have been more than happy to oblige.

Paper Garden is an online supplier of specialty papers and envelopes in Canada. A wide selection of both metallic and fine papers with matching envelopes is offered. They offer more than 80 colours of gorgeous metallic papers, most in both cover weight (thicker/heavier) and text weight (thinner/lighter). Various other textures in over 30 colours are offered in their fine paper lines.

We asked them to demostrate how specialty papers can be used to add elegance and enhance your papercraft project, whether the end product is a wedding invitation or something else entirely. As we said, if you don't feel comfortable creating your own invitations there are many other ways to add your personal style while creating beautifully detailed wedding related items. The handcrafted items can be as simple or as intricate as you choose and can vary according to your skill level.

Some useful information and other pointers

Add Sparkle with Mica-Coated Paper: The term 'metallic paper' refers to paper that has been coated with very finely ground mica crystal particles. The particles cannot be felt and the paper is very smooth. Mica-coated papers reflect light and have a beautiful unique shimmer or pearlescence. The look is almost metallic - the reason that these papers are referred to as 'metallic papers'. However, no metallic substances are used in the paper.

Printing on metallic papers with your desktop printer is possible, depending upon the weight of the paper and your printer's specifications. Certain brands of papers are laser compatible and others are also inkjet printer friendly. If you adore a certain paper but are unable to print on it consider using it as a backer for your piece.

The number one tip when creating custom invitations is to choose the envelope size before making your handcrafted invitation and insert pieces. It's much easier and less costly to utilize standard envelope sizes. The enclosure size should be a quarter of an inch smaller in height and width than the envelope. If your invitation or card is unusually thick or has large embellishments it should be downsized accordingly.

Have fun!
